29 January 2007 Suffolk police: Young speeders cause nearly half of accidents

An investigation into road safety by Suffolk police has seen young drivers in the area implicated for an increase in road deaths.

In news that may affect car insurance, the constabulary has told the East Anglian Daily Times that road deaths in the county were up by 30 per cent, with 47 killed in accidents in the area in 2006.

Some 53 per cent of fatalities occurred at the weekend and 32 per cent involved only one vehicle - suggesting speeding and dangerous driving to be the cause, according to the group.

With a further 26 per cent of victims involved being under the age of 25, Chief Inspector Martin Barnes-Smith said the report "points at the youth", blaming inexperienced driving and risk-taking.

"We, along with the Suffolk Road Safety Partnership, are working with these people to ensure that they drive more safely," he added.

Last week, the government announced increased penalties - a £60 fine and three licence points - for drivers using their phones while on the road.
