Law enforcement offers in Crewe have parked a Mercedes carrying the slogan "When It's Gone, It's Gone" outside their police station in order to force home a point about driving without motor insurance.The car will be sent to the scrap yard within weeks, the constabulary claims.
According to the authority, some 450 automobiles are being seized every month by officers in the Cheshire police eastern area and many drivers are on a final warning.
Owners have a fortnight to reclaim their vehicle before it is destroyed, picking up a fine of £105 plus VAT and service charges for the privilege.
And Superintendent Mick Garrihy has linked rogue road users to other criminal activities.
"85 per cent of the drivers whose vehicles we take because they are uninsured or because they do not have a driving license also have criminal records," he said.
Automobile crime has dropped 51 per cent since 1997, according to the Home Office, which also recorded 1.7 million vehicle-related thefts from 2005 to 2006.
