26 January 2007 Growth expected in eco-insurance market
More consumers are purchasing green car insurance services, according to the Co-Operative Bank. The group's Ethical Consumerism Report has revealed that the amount of money being spent in the UK on eco-friendly goods has increased to £29.3 billion a year - up from £8 billion over the last six years.
Greener car insurance deals have surfaced in response to this, offering drivers discounted rates if they choose to purchase an eco-friendly car.
It could be that the reduced costs save more than motorists' money, as such a move by car drivers may help the UK to reach its government-set carbon emissions reduction targets.
"From our annual Ethical Consumerism Report, it is apparent that more and more consumers are becoming environmentally aware and that influences what they buy, including the purchase of car insurance," said David Neave, director of general insurance at the group's sister company CIS Insurance.
Statistics released by the greener living group Green and Easy estimated that over three million tonnes of waste would be generated by the British public over Christmas, including enough wrapping paper to cover an area the size of Guernsey.
