25 January 2007 Safe Speed: Cameras causing lack of confidence in police

A road safety campaigner today commented on the alleged ineffectiveness of speed cameras, in news that may interest car insurance customers.

According to Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed campaign, there are a rising number of successful court challenges against camera-related offences - causing a lack of confidence in the police.

Mr Smith claimed that authorities need to restore the faith of British drivers by distinguishing between the technicalities of breaking an established speed limit and what constitutes dangerous driving.

"They are not the same and speed cameras cannot tell the difference. Prosecuting safe drivers is a waste of resources and is causing a crisis of confidence," he said.

Earlier this month, the Association of British Drivers called for the motorway speed limit to be increased to 80 mph, a figure at which the benefits of quicker journey times balance with fuel economy.
