25 January 2007 'Thousands' show interest in eco-friendly homes

There is plenty of interest from buyers when it comes to owning a house on a zero carbon site, according to a green housing developer.

If a similar move to that of the car cover industry was made - where discounted insurance policies are available for drivers with green cars, a low-emission house could lead to occupiers receiving discounts on their home insurance.

Energy efficient housing developments are being built by ZEDFactory and according to its founder, Bill Dunster, 2,000 people have expressed an interest in living there.

However, Mr Dunster points out that the company can only cater to a few and that developers like his are on their own in the industry.

"We have been very alone. We almost hope that other companies do come and do our stuff simply because it shows that the market place is developing," he says.

Research conducted by the World Development Movement has revealed that the UK emits approximately 564 million tonnes of carbon per year.
