22 January 2007 3-day vehicle crackdown a success
An initiative to tackle vehicle crime in south-east Wakefield has been a success, claim the West Yorkshire Police.Working in conjunction with Wakefield Council's neighbourhood patrollers, the nuisance vehicle team, automatic number plate recognition team, court enforcement officers and the tasking team, police distributed 320 leaflets to homes and eventually made 49 arrests.
Additionally, some 63 vehicles were confiscated for being on the road without tax or car insurance.
The collaboration was hailed by Mark Bownass, acting inspector for the south-east neighbourhood policing team.
"We are delighted with these results and criminals should be warned that we will continue to target those we suspect of committing offences," he said.
The sentiment was mirrored by local councillor Olivia Rowley, cabinet member for community safety and cohesion, who also warned potential vehicle criminals in the area.
"We will not accept people driving illegally," she said.
Figures released last week by the Association of Chief Police Officers showed 6.6 per cent of 145,867 drivers breathalysed over the festive period were found to be over the legal alcohol limit.
