22 January 2007 Britons to lose '£170m in January burglaries'
Home insurance customers could be at risk in January - where 26 per cent more burglaries will occur than any other month, figures indicate. The higher likelihood of being targeted can be attributed to more valuables in the house after Christmas as well as the dark winter nights, according to Halifax Home Insurance.
Over 76,000 homes will be broken into this month, one every 35 seconds, costing home insurance customers £170 million, a study by the bank reveals.
A further breakdown of statistics from the company shows that while 60 per cent of burglaries occurred during hours without light, the rest were daylight robberies, with 28 per cent of break-ins happening in the afternoon.
"We must remember that thieves are opportunists and will strike during the day or night if they feel a property has inadequate security and the timing is right," said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance.
Last week, the head of property insurance for the Association of British Insurers, Jane Milne, said in light of the recent bad weather that provisions are "needed now" to protect home insurance customers from high prices.
