19 January 2007 'Warming up' could lead to cold, hard crime

A car insurance customer leaving their engine running unattended on icy mornings could help thieves steal their vehicle, according to a motor security group.

Darker hours and misty weather provides the perfect cover for thieves to steal a car, Retainagroup told Easier.

The group also claimed that residential areas are more prevalent to car theft due to the increasing amount of CCTV in public places.

Car theft could also affect future motor insurance claims.

"We've probably all done it; turn the heater up, switch on the heated mirrors, seat and rear window and then pop back indoors to finish breakfast," Wendy Rowe of Retainagroup comments.

"The lesson is: don't leave your car unattended."

In December, home secretary John Reid announced that car theft fell 31 per cent from 2003 to 2005 - a figure he described as a testament to those working in the car security industry.
