17 January 2007 Expert: Drivers could save 25% on costs

A good car insurance deal may not be the only way to cut costs on your vehicle, claims Car Parts Direct.

It is possible that drivers could save as much as 25 per cent on petrol by honing their driving and DIY skills, Mark Cornwall of the company told Easier.

The expert stated that drivers should perform routine checks such as assessing tyre-pressure, which can save fuel as under or over-inflated tyres can become exhausted more quickly.

A roof rack can also raise fuel costs as much as 30 per cent higher for motorists - removing it, along with any unneeded luggage, can save money, Mr Cornwall noted.

"Most of what we recommend to our customers is common sense. It's good for the motorists and the environment," the expert commented.

A report from the RAC last year revealed the average car-running cost to be £5,500 per year.

"The second biggest investment we make after home ownership - car buying - is getting bigger," said Sean Morris of the RAC.
