16 January 2007 South Tyneside drivers 'should follow letter of law'

Drivers in the south Tyneside area are being reminded to follow a police initiative launched last year, in a move that may affect car insurance claims in the region, the Shields Gazette reports.

The scheme, named Operation Leftover, saw police officers cracking down on drivers leaving items on display in their vehicles – with letters and leaflets sent to the homes of those spotted.

While the operation was considered a success, with a 25 per cent drop in reported car theft from April to December, neighbourhood inspector Peter Sutton described the amount of correspondence which needed to be sent as "disappointing".

"It is disappointing that we keep finding stuff on display in the back seat of cars, but it is something we will be continuing to look at," he told the Shields Gazette.

Last week, West Yorkshire police warned of the increase in the reported thefts of satellite navigation systems.

Detective Sergeant John Agar called the portability and expense of the systems "particularly attractive to thieves".
