15 January 2007 Insurer: 'Sex factor' doesn't decide premium

Unisex insurers may offer just as good a car insurance deal to female drivers as single-sex insurers, Moneysupermarket claims.

While gender is considered a risk factor when quotes are considered, it is one of 15 assessed, so single-sex car insurance companies could rate drivers higher in other areas.

"A women-only insurer may rate the car you drive, the occupation you have got, your age or your driving experience as a much higher influencing factor," Richard Mason, managing director of insurance at the group, says.

Mr Mason states that a woman who had been caught drink-driving would not be given an advantage by same-sex insurers when it came to finding a deal.

Research by Royal & SunAlliance last week suggested 22,500 staged accidents had occurred since 1999, which may cause car insurance premiums to increase.
