15 January 2007 Thames Valley Police "disappointed" by festive drink-drive figures
Police in Thames Valley breathalysed 1,926 drivers from December 1st 2006 to January 1st 2007 and found 13 per cent to be over the limit, a figure leaving Superintendent Mick Doyle "very disappointed".That percentage is up from last year, when nine per cent of 2,290 drivers tested positive.
The area saw 140 people lose their lives in road accidents in 2006, which is down from 149 in 2005, but Mr Doyle feels "the message is not getting through".
"Some drivers insist on risking their own lives, as well as those of other innocent road users," he told the Bucks Herald.
Car insurance claims could rise if the behaviour continues, meaning premiums could go up.
Superintendent Doyle pointed out that the tests were ongoing, not just conducted at Christmas and urged the public to report "anyone who drinks or takes drugs and drives" to police or Crimestoppers.
Meanwhile, the Isle of Man Today reports that Will Moffatt, a long-serving police officer, has been banned from driving for 14 months and fined £700 for drink driving.
