15 January 2007 One in five drivers in Northern Ireland 'never' speed

Just over one in five motorists in Northern Ireland do not exceed the speed limit, research by the Department of the Environment has revealed.

The road safety survey commissioned by the body also found that television advertisements had influenced road safety, something that may in turn reduce the number of car insurance claims.

Such a statistic could lead to lower motor insurance premiums in the country in future.

Additionally, two-thirds of respondents would be unlikely to get in a car if the driver had consumed any alcohol whatsoever; with half saying motorists should not be allowed to drink at all.

Last week, the Central Statistics and Research Branch of the Department for Regional Development announced that 16,785 new cars were registered in Northern Ireland from July 1st to September 30th 2006 - down by four per cent from the corresponding quarter in 2005.
