12 January 2007 Fresh flood warnings from local authorities

As forecasters predict further strong winds and rain, local authorities have notified residents in flood risk areas of rest centres where they can receive support and refreshments from trained staff.

The centres can be used by members of the public who cannot get home due to the weather and potential floods.

Flood warnings may serve as a reminder to home insurance customers to check exactly what their policy covers.

Those who remain at home have been given tips from the council to protect their property including reminders to cover doors, windows and airbricks with sandbags or plywood, turn off gas, electricity and water supplies at the mains and to move as much furniture as possible upstairs.

The aftermath of flooding could see lots of homeowners claiming home insurance if their property is damaged.

Nationwide, over 170 flood warnings have been issued in response to the weather.

"There have been strong gusts quite widely. Pretty much all of Scotland has had, or currently has, warnings," said a forecaster for the Met Office.
