12 January 2007 Fewer new cars on the road in Northern Ireland

 There are fewer new cars on the road in Northern Ireland, according to statistics covering July 1st to September 30th 2006 published by the Central Statistics and Research Branch of the Department for Regional Development.

The Northern Ireland Road and Rail Transport Statistics Quarterly Bulletin says 16,785 new cars are on the road compared to the 17,443 new cars registered in the corresponding quarter in 2005, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Some 577 new cars registered during the third quarter of 2006 were imported from the Republic of Ireland.

There were 960 heavy goods vehicles registered in the country during quarter three, with 63 per cent of them having been previously used - up from the previous quarter where 52 per cent of 1,256 vehicles registered were used.

The report also discloses that 191,760 tonnes of petroleum were brought into Northern Ireland during the quarter - an increase of nearly 13 per cent from the same period in 2005.

Meanwhile, winds of up to 90 mph may spread across the UK today, with Northern Ireland being "badly hit", reports ITN.
