11 January 2007 Flood alerts pour in

Home insurance claims could increase in the coming weeks as the Environment Agency has issued a flood warning to those living along areas of the rivers Severn and Vrynwy.

Today the agency has stated it will erect demountable flood barriers at Frankwell in Shrewsbury as a precautionary measure.

In the meantime, American Express Insurance Services states that two million homes stand in flood risk areas and the five million people living there should consider creating an action plan in case of emergency.

Joanne Fields, marketing manager with the company, warns that while home insurance is compulsory for mortgage holders, "contents cover is not".

"A flood can wipe out the contents of a home in minutes," she said.

According to the Environment Agency, of the five million people living in flood risk areas, only one person in ten makes preparations in advance.
