10 January 2007 Satnav "indirectly" linked to higher car insurance

Displaying a satellite navigation (Satnav) system won't increase motor insurance premiums, but could create a negative "double whammy effect" which could later affect them, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Satnav devices can have an "indirect influence" on car insurance and customers who report break-ins to their insurer could lose their no claims bonus - a problem as "many insurers these days will not quote for you unless you have not had a claim for four years", says Richard Mason, managing director of the insurance channel.

The comments came after West Yorkshire Police yesterday reminded motorists not to leave their Satnav systems in their cars.

"Thieves at the moment are using the latest technology, which can track a Satnav system even when it isn't on display in a vehicle," said detective sergeant John Agar from Kirklees Vehicle Crime Team.

Meanwhile, the East Midlands Ambulance Service has lost 34 Satnav systems from their vehicles, at a cost of over £10,000, This is London reports.
