09 January 2007 Xmas home insurance claims "down 30%"

The number of home insurance claims related to burglaries made in December 2006 were 30 per cent lower than corresponding figures in 2005, Liverpool Victoria has revealed.

The company reported that while the cost of the claims is "significantly higher" than the previous year, households were less prone to burglary than in Christmas week (22nd to 28th December) 2005 by 50 per cent.

Commenting on the statistics, Peter Horton, operations director of general insurance, called the figures "reassuring", yet claimed burglars may simply have taken the festive season off.

"It may be that some burglars have taken an extended break, along with millions of others," he said.

The drop in home insurance claims over the period may also be explained by "the presence of more people at home".

Meanwhile, South Yorkshire Police have pledged to "maintain the momentum" of their Christmas crime campaign.

"Police in Doncaster will continue their relentless pursuit of criminals who commit burglaries and vehicle crime," said Detective Superintendent Bill Hotchkiss.
