09 January 2007 Young drivers "feel most vulnerable" on public transport

Young drivers are more "frightened" to use public transport than buy a vehicle, according to study by car insurance company swiftcover.com and the centre of business economics and research.

Personal safety is believed to be the main reason behind the findings with 54 per cent of the 1,787 British drivers surveyed saying they feel safer in their car.

"It is staggering that out of all the age groups, it's the 18 to 29-year-olds who feel most vulnerable travelling on public transport," said Andrew Blower, chief executive officer of the company.

"We know that most people feel safer in their cars and it's now apparent that young people feel particularly vulnerable when travelling by public means."

Results from the survey also show that, at 59 per cent, drivers in the Midlands worry most about using public transport at night.

A study in the same area, conducted by Travelometer.co.uk, found that 45 per cent of drivers who could afford to switch their car journeys for public transport would choose not to.
