05 January 2007 Young boys 'too immature to drive'

Younger boys are less mature than girls and should not be allowed to drive, according to a Welsh doctor.

Dr Paul Walker, chairman of Public Health Alliance Cymru, suggested that 17-year-old boys be restricted from driving, as they are more likely to take risks behind the wheel.

Although it generally takes girls longer to learn, they are "far less likely" to have serious accidents as they have a different attitude to driving, he continued.

He told the Western Mail: "The current driving test arrangements are clearly not fit for purpose for modern driving conditions."

The comments follow a recent government announcement that it is considering toughening up the driving test system, as well as teaching children about safe driving as part of the national curriculum.

Young male drivers have been cited by some insurance industry groups as a reason why car insurance premiums are being raised.

Recently, Royal Bank of Scotland Insurance followed Norwich Union in hiking prices due to factors such as the increasing cost of personal injury claims and compensation.
