05 January 2007 People should 'get rid of Christmas present packaging'

Householders have been advised to reduce the risk of burglary by disposing of the packaging of expensive Christmas gifts.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) urged people to consider taking the empty boxes to a rubbish tip, as leaving them at home could signal the presence of expensive new items to opportunist thieves.

Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at Biba, said: "If you received extremely valuable things then advertising it in the street isn't necessarily a good thing to do."

He added that not leaving boxes out on the street was "common sense".

People were also told to ensure that any expensive items do not exceed the single article limit on their home insurance, as items such as plasma televisions could be worth more than the cover limit.

This follows warnings from insurers and police forces across the UK that burglars are increasingly likely to strike at this time of year, due to the number of expensive Christmas presents in people's homes.
