04 January 2007 Drivers told not to leave valuables in car
Drivers have been urged to take any valuable items with them if they are leaving their car unattended.Gloucestershire Police warned that the risk of a car being broken into would increase if owners left items such as laptop computers in full view inside the vehicle.
The force said that although laptops could be a "hassle" to carry round, the inconvenience paled in comparison with paying to replace stolen equipment and claiming on their car insurance.
Sergeant Mark Godsland, crime reduction officer in the Cotswold area, commented: "Most car crime is opportunist and entirely preventable.
"If a thief cannot spot valuable items inside a vehicle they are unlikely to break in."
He added that this also applied to low-value items, such as loose change and CDs.
Police are advising car owners to make sure their vehicles are kept locked and that their alarms and immobilisers are set.
Recently, Greater Manchester Police carried out a "sting" operation against thieves, by leaving dummy satellite navigation systems on show in cars to tempt them to break in.
The operation has led to multiple arrests and cut car crime in the area by 40 per cent in three months.
