04 January 2007 Homeowners urged to take security precautions
Police in Lincolnshire are calling on people to take preventative measures to help them in case they are burgled. Householders were warned that criminals are likely to strike at this time of year as homes will be full of expensive gifts from Christmas.
Officers are urging people to get valuable items such as bicycles, satellite navigation systems and various electrical goods security marked.
PC Andy Steeples, crime reduction officer, said: "Criminals are always on the prowl for easy pickings and unfortunately this time of year there are plenty around."
"By getting your property security marked, you are going a long way to ensuring that it can be traced and, hopefully, returned."
This follows a similar warning from Privilege Insurance, which urged people to make sure that their homes were secure to prevent possible burglaries.
The firm stated that since thieves will be tempted to steal items expensive new Christmas presents, such as iPods and MP3 players, people should make sure they are covered by their home insurance.
PC Steeples also advised people not to leave important information stored in mobile phones, such as bank details and pin numbers.
