03 January 2007 Toll charge increase criticised

A campaign group has criticised the increase in toll charges on two major road links in the UK.

John Warman, founder of the Campaign Against Severn Tolls (Cast), stated that the introduction of higher toll charges on the two Severn Bridges was a "black day" for motorists.

Speaking to the Western Mail, he said that the new toll had broken the psychological barrier of the maximum amount drivers would be willing to pay.

For example, the charge for van drivers has passed the £10 threshold with a 40p increase, while car owners must pay more than £5 to cross the bridge.

Mr Warman commented: "I think it's going to have quite a sobering effect on road users who will really be conscious of the cost of going over the bridge."

He also warned that the Welsh economy could be affected by the price hikes as motorists in England would now be less inclined to cross the river.

With the increased cost of toll charges, motorists have been advised to shop around to make sure they get the best quote for their van insurance.
