02 January 2007 Satnavs 'snatched from occupied cars'

Thieves in Manchester are increasingly targeting occupied cars for satellite navigation systems, according to police.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) highlighted 13 incidents across the city which saw the devices snatched from cars waiting at traffic lights.

Motorists have been warned to take precautions to protect their cars, such as making sure that the devices are placed at the centre of the dashboard and away from the door window.

In addition, police urged people to take extra care while driving and to remove satellite navigation systems from sight when they are not being used.

GMP stated that following these safety measures would reduce the chances of vehicles being targeted and make it more difficult for thieves to steal the devices.

Detective Inspector Vanessa Jardine said: "These incidents cause a lot of shock and alarm to drivers who are still sat behind the wheel when the attack happens.

"In eight of these cases, the thief has smashed the driver's window before reaching in and grabbing the device from the dashboard."

This follows recent research from Autoglass, which found that 14 per cent of drivers have had their cars broken into during the last two years, of which 41 per cent reported the loss of gadgets such as satellite navigation systems, mobile phones and digital music players.

Motorists should make sure they are financially prepared for any criminal acts by having full car insurance
