02 January 2007 People without heating cover 'pay more for repairs'

Many UK householders are not prepared for the possibility of their boiler breaking down, new research has warned.

According to price comparison site uSwitch, around two million people do not have suitable heating cover plans, meaning that they are paying a disproportionate amount in repairs in the event of a breakdown.

The site said that although heating cover was viewed by many as an unnecessary expense, it was more cost effective than paying out for costly repair bills, which could also increase their home insurance premiums.

Geoff Slaughter, product manager at uSwitch.com, commented: "When you consider the prospect of being without hot water and heating in the winter months, or being landed with a bill for as much as £470, heating cover becomes incredibly cost effective."

He added that since the weather during autumn was unusually mild, consumers may have been lulled into a false sense of security with their heating.

The site is recommending that people get their boilers inspected once a year to pre-empt and potential problems, adding that it could be difficult to get an engineer in winter due to the high demand.

Consumers were recently asked by the government to monitor their heating usage in order to determine their carbon output.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs wants to help energy users work out their contributions to harmful emissions and work out where they money could be saved on fuel bills.
