29 December 2006 Cars to be scrapped for nothing
The government is to introduce a service which will allow drivers to dispose of their unwanted cars free of charge. From January 1st, an EU directive means that it is down to the vehicle manufacturer to dispose of their unwanted models, something that science and innovation minister Malcolm Wicks said was a "positive development for the environment and car owners".
Mike Austin-Dodds, general manager of Autogreen, which along with Cartakeback is one of the two main recyclers, said that cars will be reused, from the tyres to the oil.
Metal from cars is also highly desirable, with India and China said to be keen to collect the scrap.
However, Mr Austin-Dodds told the BBC that the legislation would help to make sure that vehicles were dealt with in "an environmentally friendly manner" as well as ensuring that the cars were deregistered from the DVLA database.
"Otherwise it will still be registered to the last owner," he stated.
While this is a good idea for anyone planning to dispose of their car, motorists are reminded to seek out comprehensive car insurance which could offer a replacement if they unexpectedly have to dispose of their vehicle through an accident.
