28 December 2006 Cold weather puts pressure on tyres

Drivers in the UK are being urged to ensure that their tyres are properly inflated during the winter months.

As the cold weather sets in, many motorists are running the risk of having to make a car insurance claim due to the roads becoming more dangerous.

The dangers not only lie in icy roads and reduced visibility, but also in tyres, which are more susceptible to deflation in lower temperatures.

Tyre-maker Goodyear is warning motorists to make regular checks on their tyre pressure or run the risk of wearing away the tread or losing steering control and braking grip.

"If the last time the tyre pressure was checked was during the heat of summer, with temperatures around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, many people could be riding on severely under-inflated tyres without realising it," said Bob Toth from Goodyear.

"The four patches of rubber that come in contact with the road surface are vitally important to the performance of the vehicle. They are key for acceleration, lateral traction and braking grip."

Motorists are being advised to check tyre pressure at least once every month, with Mr Toth saying it can fall by as much as two pounds for every ten Fahrenheit drop in temperature.
