22 December 2006 'Don't drive tired' says council

Motorists are being warned about the dangers of driving while tired over the Christmas period.

Lancashire City Council's Road Safety Group is urging drivers to ensure that they get plenty of rest before setting off and says it is imperative that journeys are planned well in advance.

Neil Cunliffe, Road Safety Group manager, comments that driver fatigue is worse in cold and dark conditions and turning on the heating does not necessarily help.

Having the heater turned on too high reduces the amount of oxygen in the car, leading to yawning and increased tiredness.

"During the Christmas period many people will be visiting relatives, which may involve long or late night dark journeys," says Mr Cunliffe.

"If you drive while tired, you are putting yourself and everyone else on the road at risk."

The Road Safety Group is also encouraging drivers to take plenty of breaks during long journeys and recommends driving in shifts if possible.

Driver fatigue is proven to be a factor in many car accidents, particularly around Christmas and new year and could lead to motorists having to make a car insurance claim.
