21 December 2006 Key warning after bold car thief simply drives away

Motorists are being advised to keep their car keys with them at all times following the theft of a woman's car after she left the keys in the ignition when she went to post some letters.

The anonymous owner claimed to be surprised as she didn't even see the thief until her car began to set off without her, according to Exeter's Express & Echo newspaper. The thief still has not been found.

Local police are now taking this opportunity to remind motorists to take their keys with them whenever they are out of their vehicles, even if it is for a short time, such as when paying for petrol or posting a letter.

A police spokesman also warned drivers not to leave their vehicles unattended while waiting for their windscreens to defrost in the morning.

"With the cold weather and heavy frosts motorists may also be tempted to leave their vehicles engine running whilst their cars are unattended to defrost the glass before driving away.

"Not only is this practice tempting for a car thief but if the vehicle is left on a public road then the driver commits an offence of 'quitting' and may receive a fixed penalty notice," the spokesman added.

Motorists are reminded that thefts, break-ins and damage to their vehicles can all affect the price of their car insurance.
