20 December 2006 Leave criminals out in the cold this Christmas

Police officers from the West Yorkshire Police Department are appealing to homeowners to force would-be burglars to stay out in the cold this winter by following a few simple steps.

The probability of a break-in is significantly raised at this time of year and as if losing all of the Christmas gifts wasn't bad enough, a break-in can often affect your house insurance.

Detective inspector John Minary, the force's crime reduction officer, is leading a major awareness campaign this month which is aimed at informing the public on how best to avoid attracting thieves into their homes.

"We want to wish people across the county a safe Christmas and a crime-free new year. Obviously we don't want to spoil people's fun but we want them to use their common sense and reduce the opportunity for crime to be committed," he stressed.

DI Minary advises the public to lock all presents and valuable out of sight within the house to stop potential thieves looking in through the window and being enticed in by an expensive looking present.

He also suggested keeping all wallets, purses, cheque books and credit cards out of sight, adding: "Remember, if you don't have your eye on your purse or wallet, someone else may have."

Finally, DI Minary urged homeowners to resist the temptation to lay the presents under the Christmas tree before the big day arrives to prevent attracting the attention of an unwanted guest.
