19 December 2006 Richard and Judy's CO scare
TV's golden couple Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan have recalled their near-death experience, caused by simply turning off an extractor fan.Talking to the Sunday Mail, the pair explained how they had been "one log away from death" after their traditional fire started to emit dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide in their second home in Cornwall.
Richard told the newspaper: "We stupidly turned off the fan because it was noisy. The fire was burning until midnight, then we went to bed. We woke the next afternoon feeling like death.
"An engineer said that another log on the fire would have been it."
When the celebrity couple went to the doctor for a check-up they were horrified to find out that they had inhaled dangerous amounts of the poisonous gas.
Damage to a person's health is often the main issue surrounding high levels of carbon monoxide, but in faulty gas appliances it could lead to an explosion, causing untold amounts of damage to both material possessions and the structural aspects of the family home.
Research shows that nearly one in ten UK homes had dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, with one in four homes having at least one faulty gas appliance like a fire or a boiler, highlighting the need for homeowners to take home insurance.
