18 December 2006 70% of Brits prepared for winter driving
A new survey carried out by Kia Motors has discovered that over 70% of British drivers are prepared for the inevitable bad weather ahead as they carry de-icer or an ice scraper in their glove compartment. Many of the drivers questioned also said they carried a map, a first aid kit, a torch and blankets for emergencies.
Each year thousands of motorists are involved in accidents during the winter months, which can lead to a rise in car insurance policies.
These accidents are caused by treacherous road conditions, low visibility and mechanical malfunctions brought on by the cold.
Worryingly however, one in four drivers doesn't keep their manufacturer's handbook in the car, something which is required by law.
Glove compartments also proved to be useful for holding non-emergency items like sweets and the motorist's music collection, as well as spare bits of change and 'rubbish'.
Slightly more obscure items that drivers admitted to keeping in their car's fold-away section included a stethoscope, handcuffs, dog food and sexy underwear.
Stephen Kitson, communications director of Kia Motors said: "It's encouraging to see that a lot of British motorists are well prepared for difficult driving situations or breakdowns and accidents."
