18 December 2006 Van drivers told to steer clear on December 21st
December 21st will see the worst traffic over the Christmas period and lorry and van drivers are being warned by Trafficmaster to steer clear of travelling then if they can.Afternoon rush hour on that day will start as early as 14:00GMT and last until 19:00 GMT, caused by a mix of HGVs making last-minute deliveries, commuters leaving work early for holidays, panicking Christmas shoppers and journeying families.
More cars on the roads not only means more traffic jams, it could also lead to driver frustration and road rage.
This, combined with the treacherous road conditions at this time of year, makes it one of the most dangerous times to be out driving and could result in more accidents which will raise van insurance premiums.
Philip Hale, spokesman for Trafficmaster, recommended that if you have to drive on December 21st, you should plan your route thoroughly, allow plenty of time for your journey and get up-to-date traffic information where you can.
He also warned that the days immediately after Christmas will have high volumes of traffic, stating: "Many people will be heading to shopping centres for the traditional sales period, HGVs will be on the roads to re-stock shelves and football fans will be heading to matches."
The worst roads for van drivers at this time of the year included the M1 around Luton and in the East Midlands, the M60 around Manchester, the M32 from Bristol and the dreaded M25.
