12 December 2006 Toyota joins the list of manufacturers who discovered faulty brakes
'Tis the season for faulty brakes, as Toyota becomes the fourth manufacturer to recall a selection of its cars, as reported in WhatCar?.The Japanese manufacturer, which is normally envied for its impeccable safety record, was forced to recall over 15,000 cars last month after faults were discovered in three key areas.
One of the these issues was that the engines in the 7893 Yaris, Yaris Verso and Prius hybrids, all built between January and October 2001, began to stall without warning.
Toyota found that oil penetrating into wiring was causing the engine to stall, making it impossible to restart.
In addition, a potential fault with 7606 Land Cruisers, built between April 1996 and January 1999, could result in a fracture of the rear axle and the vehicle becoming immobilised.
Avensis family cars, manufactured between May and June this year, were also recalled for inspection after concerns about the tyres on cars fitted with 16-inch steel wheels deflating came to light.
Previously, BMW was forced to recall select models of its series 1 and 3 for brakes testing and Honda wanted to see its 8820 Civic small family cars after rumours that their power steering could suddenly fail without warning.
Volkswagen is still out in front though after it recalled 43,000 of its Passats in the UK alone, after faults were discovered in its braking systems and its windscreen wipers. Worldwide, 300,000 Passats were returned to the dealers for inspection.
Motorists are advised that even brand new cars are fallible and that to prepare they should ensure that they have adequate car insurance.
