08 December 2006 ABI assures consumers that most will pay out
Following yesterday's freak tornado that landed for less than a minute in north-west London, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has assured homeowners that most house insurance companies will pay out compensation.Estimates of the damage caused by yesterday's 130mph gusts have reached as high as £600,000, with the BBC reporting that at least 20 of the houses that were struck are now uninhabitable.
To avoid confusion, the ABI has issued a statement advising homeowners on what to do. Damage caused to homes and any businesses will be covered by buildings insurance. And most household policies will cover the cost of alternative accommodation (up to policy limit) if you need to move out of your home while repairs are carried out.
Damage to motor vehicles will be covered under comprehensive motor insurance, although those with third party may struggle to claim compensation.
Finally, the ABI advises anyone who suffered damage to their person to contact their health insurer for advice on making a claim.
It also advises to arrange for any temporary repairs to be carried out immediately to prevent further damage and to retain receipts in order to aid forming a belated claim.
