07 December 2006 Uninsured driver punished by having car crushed
Police in Hull crushed the car of a man who told them he wasn't aware that he needed insurance after he wrote-off his vehicle and caused an undisclosed amount of damage to another motorist, the Hull Daily Mail reports.Ben Marris, 20, pleaded guilty to the charges of careless driving and driving without insurance and received a £300 fine for driving without insurance, plus £150 for driving without due care and attention. He was also charged £43 costs and had his licence endorsed with six penalty points.
In a bizarre bit of bad luck, Mr Marris was forced to defend himself, as council-appointed defence solicitors in Hull had gone on strike.
Chairman of the bench at Hull magistrates court, John Stanley, told Mr Marris that he was to consider himself incredibly lucky that the other motorist involved in the crash was not pursuing uninsured loss recovery.
Humberside police is working alongside the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in adopting a tough stance on uninsured vehicles. The DVLA has granted police the authority to crush them within two weeks if valid insurance documents are not produced.
