05 December 2006 Gov leads the way by spending £1bn on going green

Environmental issues have dominated the motoring press recently and with political parties campaigning on who is the greenest, Labour has thrown down the gauntlet by proclaiming to have put aside £1 billion to make all ministerial vans and cars eco-friendly.

In all 78,000 vans, cars, trucks and lorries will be replaced with greener, more fuel-efficient versions over the next four years. The vehicles will be used in government departments and public services like the NHS.

Vauxhall, Ford, Toyota, BMW, Honda, Volvo, Nissan and Volkswagen are all involved in manufacturing the new, environmentally friendly vehicles.

Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, the work and pensions minister, told the Times: "This will not only contribute to the government's efficiency goals but will also help the public sector to hit its targets on vehicle emissions."

The scheme will be paid for by all of the 38 government departments and agencies which have agreed to go green in exchange for large discounts on cars available under the partnership

Discounts are also offered as an incentive by many van insurance companies as insurers look to assert their place as the most dominant, eco-friendly player on the market.
