05 December 2006 Flashed once, pay for the next three years
Many young drivers are unaware that their car insurance premium will increase and stay high for three years if they are caught by a speed camera.Whilst most drivers knew that they could expect a £60 fine and possibly three points on their licence for violating a speed offence or jumping a red light, far fewer realised that it would have a negative impact on their car insurance.
An article by the Mail on Sunday highlighted the lack of awareness, telling the story of Andy Neary who was caught driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone and was surprised to find that his car insurance premium had rocketed.
He told the Mail: "Being a young lad and having a fast car, insurance is always expensive, but mine, through one lapse of concentration, has got an awful lot dearer."
Andy went on to say that the experience had definitely taught him a lesson, stating: "The fine has made me more aware of speed, having a car is essential for work as I travel to jobs around Liverpool and Manchester. I can't afford to be caught."
Home office figures show that in 2004, 1.91 million speeding prosecutions used cameras to provide evidence against the defendant with a further 124,000 motorists prosecuted for jumping a red light.
