05 December 2006 Scotland braces itself for more bad weather after mass flooding

Scotland suffered severe flooding in the Dumfries area after the river Nith burst its banks following the recent spate of bad weather.

The west of Scotland is believed to have suffered the worst, with around 600 homes left without power after the storms hit two days ago. Scottish Power said it was working across the nation in a bid to restore energy to the affected homes.

"Severe flooding is expected for the area, affecting many homes and businesses, main roads and large areas of land. There is a serious danger to life and property," a Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) spokesman told the Tayside Courier.

So severe were the winds accompanying the storm, officials were forced to close the Erskine bridge, situated just outside Glasgow.

Six severe flood warnings were in place last night, mainly in Perthshire and while many areas were given the all-clear this morning, many residents are fearful that the now-broken banks of many of Scotland's lochs and rivers may allow flooding to occur again if the predicted rain should hit over the coming weekend.

Flooding can cause huge amounts of damage both to items inside consumer's property and to the structural aspect of their homes so it is imperative for homeowners to ensure that their home insurance is up to date.
