30 November 2006 Essex vigilantes fight car crime
Residents in the Ilford area of Essex have decided to take the law into their own hands after they were offered limited support despite a spate of car break-ins.
Speaking to the Ilford Recorder, Raj Thavaphlasingam complained that the police force was not doing enough to prevent crime happening in his local area, despite his constant attempts at communication with them.
He warned that unless something was done, residents were going to revert to vigilantism, stating that one had already chased after a thief with a baseball bat, but had not caught up with him.
"We would just like to see more police patrolling the area and I want to warn other residents to take care," Mr Thavaphlasingam said.
Pc Gavin Brinkler of Mayfield safer neighbourhoods team admitted: "From September 1st there have been three motor vehicle crimes and one burglary in [Mr Thavaphlasingam's] street.
"Patrols will be stepped up and we would advise people not to take matters into their own hands," he added before stating that anyone who wanted crime prevention advice should contact their local police station.
Car crime affects all areas of the UK and motorists are advised to make sure that their car insurance policies are up to date and provide enough cover for any additional items stored in the vehicle.
