30 November 2006 Renault crash 10,000th car
Not many motorists would be celebrating crashing their 10,000th car, not least because it would lead to an expensive car insurance renewal, but then not every motorist works as a safety assessment officer at Renault.
For 50 years, Renault have been dutifully denting, crashing and otherwise damaging their cars in a concentrated effort to continually improve the safety record of their vehicles.
The last five decades have seen over 100,000 videos made and over half a million photographs taken in order to gain a better understanding of what happens to a car and its passengers at the point of impact.
So effective are the Renault engineers that the Laguna launched in 2004 was the first vehicle to be awarded five stars for safety by the Euro NCap examiners and it remains a benchmark for other cars to aim for even today.
Renault can now proudly boast of eight cars in its current fleet which have obtained the coveted five-star award.
In addition, Renault's safety initiatives go beyond that of just those in and on the car; its Safety for all campaign, launched in 2000, has taught road safety to eight million children in 21 countries, including visits to 15,000 schools in the UK.
