29 November 2006 Car insurance cheats crushed
Punishment in one of its severest forms has been handed out to car insurance dodgers in Lincolnshire, as the police announce their 1,000th car crushed due to a lack of insurance.Motorists who avoid paying for car insurance are costing honest drivers £30 extra in car insurance premiums according to research carried out by the British Insurance Brokers' Association and that was one of the reasons behind the extensive crackdown.
Inspector Les Parker told the Lincolnshire Echo, that typically, the 1,600 cars seized so far were around ten-years-old. "It's mostly Ford Escorts, of which we've had about 130 seized, followed closely by Vauxhall Cavaliers and Astras, with 71 of each and 65 Fiestas," he added.
The historic 1,000th car to be crushed was a ten-year-old BMW 3 Series. Had its owner wanted to reclaim the car before it was disposed of, they could have responded within the 14 day allocated period and provided some evidence of insurance or a driving licence along with proof of ownership.
Car owner must pay a £105 recovery charge plus a £12 a day storage fee or risk having their car crushed. They will automatically also face police prosecution under the Serious and Organised Crime Act of 2005.
Local salvage yard manager Darren Motley, praised the scheme, saying: "It's not fair that the honest motorist has to pay extra because some people don't have insurance, but that's unfortunately the way of the world."
