28 November 2006 Biba calls for insurance enforcement agency
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has called on the government to introduce an independent insurance enforcement agency to crackdown on the number of uninsured drivers.
"The Department for Transport is likely to launch a new enforcement agency under the Road Safety Act 2005. This group will concentrate on continuous insurance being on record," said Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at Biba.
Operation Foist saw the early implementation of this sort of idea, where the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London clamped and towed 1,320 uninsured vehicles in east London, averaging 50 cars a day.
"Basically, if your car is on the road, it is uninsured and not on the motor insurance database, then the new transport enforcement agency will start confiscating these vehicles," Mr Trudgill clarified.
Uninsured drivers are among the most dangerous motorists on the road. Mr Trudgill explained that Operation Foist is part of a wider campaign to make drivers think twice before driving without insurance.
"These drivers really are a scourge. They are eight times more likely to cause or have an accident, they put up car insurance premiums and their cars are probably not fit for the road anyway.
"Because of Britain's two million uninsured drivers, everyone is paying £30 more than they should," Mr Trudgill concluded.
