22 November 2006 Van drivers encouraged to get eyes tested

Eye specialists Specsavers recently conducted a survey which showed that a fifth of company drivers had not had their sight tested in more than five years.

These motorists included lorry and van drivers who spend hours everyday traversing the motorways and highways of Britain.

With 98 per cent of the drivers asked agreeing that the majority of road accidents are caused by motorists with bad eye sight, it seems odd that so few have had their eyes tested regularly.

Specsavers' research also found that 87 per cent of drivers said it should be compulsory for them to have their sight tested every five years.

Nine out of ten drivers also felt that if the law was changed to enforce eye tests, it would help to change stigmas and employers' attitudes towards wearing glasses.

Driver errors cause the vast majority of accidents on the road so it is vital for van drivers to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy and that you have adequate van insurance.
