21 November 2006 Winter driving course offered in Yorks
Winter can be a treacherous time of years for motorists, with black ice, snow and darkened evenings all increasing the likelihood of being involved in some form of driving accident.
In order to prevent this, an advanced driving course has been organised for motorists in north Yorkshire.
Taught in the town of Hambleton, the course will be given free of charge and aims to give driving tips for less confident drivers on how to deal with ice and snow on the roads.
Drivers who want to progress their motoring skills further can opt for more advanced classes on skid control and anti-lock braking at Elvington airfield near York.
Organiser John Everson, from north Yorkshire county council, said: "As the days get shorter and the weather deteriorates, driving can be a very frightening prospect, especially so if you're going it alone.
"This course is a fun way of meeting people, building confidence and learning some important skills that might one day save your life.
"Armed with the knowledge and training this course provides, even if the worst happens to you and you're in an accident, you'll know what to do about it," he concluded.
Taking advanced courses not only makes you a safer driver, it can lower your car insurance premiums too.
New drivers are encouraged to undertake the PassPlus course to learn about advanced motoring skills, such as motorway and rural driving and travelling in the dark.
