20 November 2006 Kitemark will help consumers choose safest mechanic

The British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark for servicing and repair of vehicles has become the first such scheme to be accredited by the government-recognised United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

BSI claims that British consumers spend £4 billion each year on rip-off repairs and substandard serving and hopes that the new Kitemark scheme will help motorists find honest garages and mechanics.

Anne Boyd, managing director at BSI product services, commented: "Enhancing customer service leads to improved business performance and service standards.

"The Kitemark acts as an asset enabling the more professional operators to differentiate themselves from less reputable traders whose behaviour has blighted the reputation of the industry," she concluded.

Alastair Trivett, global managing director at BSI, added: "UKAS accreditation of the Kitemark scheme strengthens further our commitment to raising standards in vehicle servicing and repair and also that of the Kitemark brand in the automotive industry.

"It proves to our customers, existing and potential, that BSI itself operates to high standards of professionalism and the Kitemark is the key choice for garages wishing to boost their business."

Motorists should have their cars serviced regularly to avoid accidents and breakdowns and ensure they have adequate cover from their car insurance company.
