17 November 2006 Vans to have their speed limited
Plans are in place to put speed limiters into many large vans in the new year. The limiters would only allow the vehicles to reach a top speed of 56mph.
The new legislation applies to all vans over 3.5 tonnes fitted with Euro 3 engines, registered between October 2001 and December 2004.
Doubts as to whether this will be fully implemented or not have been cast by the Freight Transport Association (FTA), who claim that only a few of the models have been modified so far.
It warned that since the campaign had been running for over two years, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (Vosa) would be unlikely to let anyone off the hook if they were caught without the necessary calibrations.
FTA also recommended trucker and lorry firms to book themselves into the advising operators as soon as possible as it was more than likely that there would be a big rush in the run up to the end of December.
Vosa has been clamping down on all manner of traffic violations recently in a bid to make Britain's roads safer for all users.
It is hoped that the speed limited will help prevent accidents on the motorways and rural roads, which in turn can save drivers money on their van insurance.
