17 November 2006 Anger at police van in bus-stop

Bus-stops are something of a necessary evil in society. For those who use public transport, the bus-stops not only provide an obvious place to catch a bus, but with more and more of them being placed in purpose built lay-by, they also provide a safe way of boarding them.

If a motorist should park in one of these spaces they can be fined, clamped, even towed away, so it is understandable that residents in Holmer Green have been angered at the police who park their speed vans in them.

One resident, Stuart King, was so incensed that he wrote a letter to the local press which sparked a campaign for the police to be made to obey the Highway Code.

"Now I know these vans can also detect unlicensed vehicles and uninsured drivers and the more of these criminals they catch the safer we shall all be," he wrote to the Bucks Free Press.

"But I would like to know how many local drivers this van is penalising for doing 35mph as opposed to how many criminals it has processed through the courts while itself making this road a greater danger by its own actions?"

Upon spotting one such policeman, Mr King confronted him: "I said he was a hypocrite for parking in a bus stop. He replied that 'it is a public highway sir, and we have permission'. He then drove off."

Motorists are reminded that the Highway Code is there to protect all road users and should be obeyed at all costs. Failure to do so could result in an accident and an increase on your car insurance.
