16 November 2006 Would you let this man drive?

Residents in a small town in Carmarthenshire have been complaining about a learner driver who they claim could end up seriously hurting or killing someone if he passes his test.

Peter Davies, 25, from Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, has just 50 per cent effective vision in one eye and 45 per cent in the other. He has been learning to drive for over four years and feels he is not far off taking his test.

But Pam Every, a local town councillor and chairwoman of the Isgraig Tenants and Residents' Association, told the Daily Mirror that he was not fit to drive.

"Just last month he mounted a kerb that was three or four foot wide and hit a fence. There could have been a child or adult walking there and he could have hurt or even killed them," she stressed.

Mr Davies is currently taking lessons from his father after his previous instructor abandoned the sessions without giving a reason.

The DVLA said they couldn't comment on an individual case but stated that a potential driver had to be able to read a car number plate from 20.5m or 20m where narrower characters are displayed.

Drivers with bad sight are allowed to operate a vehicle if wearing prescription lenses which boost their eye sight to the legal requirements.

If Mr Davies does pass his test, as a new driver he may need to shop around in order to obtain cheaper car insurance.
